A/Prof Katherine Tonks is the founder of Sydney Endocrinology, a Staff Specialist of the Department of Endocrinology, St. Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney, Visiting Medical Officer at the Mater Hospital, North Shore Private, and Clinical Research Officer of the Diabetes and Obesity Research Program, Garvan Institute of Medical Research, Sydney. She is a Conjoint (Lecturer) Associate Professor at the University of New South Wales, and an Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Notre Dame.

After completing her medical degree at the University of New South Wales with Honours, she worked as a junior medical officer at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPAH), Camperdown. She underwent her Advanced Endocrine Training at St. Vincent’s Hospital, St.George Hospital, and the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, and was admitted to the Royal Australian College of Physicians as an Endocrinologist in 2008.

A/Prof Tonks helped form the Multidisciplinary Diabetes Foot Clinic at St. Vincent’s Hospital in 2008, and was accepted into the Diabetes Centre at St. Vincent’s Hospital in 2009 as an Honorary Medical Officer. She is also currently a Staff Specialist at St. Vincent’s Hospital. She completed a PhD looking at the molecular causes of insulin resistance and diabetes in 2016.

A/Prof Tonks’ areas of interest are diabetes (type 1, type 2 and pregnancy-related), insulin resistance including polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, obesity and other endocrine diseases including a special interest in women’s health. She sees patients at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Darlinghurst, the Mater Hospital, North Sydney, North Shore Private Hospital, St Leonards, Sydney Adventist Hospital, Wahroonga and in consulting rooms at North Sydney, Wahroonga and Bankstown.

She regularly attends national and international meetings and has given talks to scientists, other doctors, and public seminars at the Garvan Institute and for the Australian Pituitary Foundation. She was an invited speaker at the 2011 Endocrine Society of Australia Annual Scientific Meeting, Perth. She continues to teach medical students and actively participates in ongoing medical research.
